Paris - Security will be ramped up for Wednesday's French Cup semi-final between Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco in the capital, police said on Tuesday.

"Special surveillance" measures will be put in place around PSG's Parc des Princes stadium including extra security checks for pedestrians and vehicles.

The news comes less than a week since a policeman was killed in a terrorist attack on the city's world famous Champs Elysees avenue.

Police will also have the use of metal detectors while there will be a reinforcement of stewards for the clash between the top two teams in the French league.

Special efforts will also be made to prevent fans from bringing smoke bombs into the stadium, police said.

French football has been wracked by fan violence in recent weeks with trouble at matches in Bastia, Lyon and Saint-Etienne.
