Free-scoring Cavani commits to PSG until 2020

Amidst the most prolific season of his career, Uruguayan hitman Edinson Cavani has signed a new contract with Paris Saint-Germain until 2020.

Cavani has virtually erased immediate memories of Zlatan Ibrahimovic after playing second fiddle to the big Swede for the past three years. Cavani and Lionel Messi are the only two players in the top-five European leagues to break the 30-goal mark so far this season. Between his commitments for club and country, he has bulged the net a ridiculous 50 times.

"I am very happy to extend my contract and my commitment to Paris Saint-Germain," Cavani, whose previous deal was set to expire in June 2018, said in a statement. "As I have always stated, it was always my clear intention to continue playing for Paris, its supporters, and all the staff at the club to make it one of the biggest clubs in the world.

"I am convinced that the club has the potential to attain all its objectives. Together, we will be more and more ambitious in the coming seasons."

Cavani moved quickly to shed his reputation as a big-game bottler, scoring important goals against Ligue 1 title rivals Monaco and Nice and against the likes of Arsenal and Barcelona in the Champions League.

"He is quite simply the best striker in the world at the moment," chairman and CEO Nasser Al-Khelaifi added. "He is one of the elite strikers in Europe. Edi feels great in Paris and has a veritable love affair with the club, the fans, and the city. Edi is making history at the club, courtesy of his goals, but also his commitment and ambition."

Already closing in on Ibrahimovic's club-record 156 goals, Cavani has banished the ghosts of all those calamitous near misses and sitters. He is no longer isolated on the left wing, where he was forced to play when Ibrahimovic was around, and no longer the target of derision from the home crowd.

Cavani and PSG are still competing on multiple fronts, with the Ligue 1 title and Coupe de France well within reach.
