Didier Drogba hopes to fulfil his promise and return to Marseille.

The Ivorian striker spent a season with Marseille before moving to Chelsea, where he spent the majority of his career.

Now that he's without a team, following his departure from the Montreal Impact, Drogba expressed his desire to return to the Ligue 1 outfit.

"There is an option to return to France, but I will no say more," he said to Canal+, as translated by James Walker-Roberts of Sky Sports. "I hope to be able to hold my promise one day (to return to Marseille). It can be done. You just have to take the time to sit down and talk.

However, the 38-year-old suggested a return to Marseille is complicated, considering the cynicism that's revolved around his possible return and the team's unwillingness to meet his wage demands in past years.

He added that the decision will, ultimately, come down to the team's board.

"My comeback at Marseille is the eternal question for more than 12 years now. Every time I respond, and people say I'm just talking. But you let a player go, and financially he is making a good living since then, and now you want him to come back and divide his salary in two.

"And after that, you say he doesn't like Marseille. Who works to earn less? No one.

"I would like to come back as a player, but I can't force the board to bring me back."

Although his stint was brief, Drogba managed to find the back of the net 27 times in 46 matches before departing.
