Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has no interest in selling Moussa Sissoko, despite the player he appointed skipper in April stating he'd like to leave "as early as possible."

Much to the bemusement of Magpies' supporters, the midfielder followed up a largely languid season in English football by assuming an important role for France at Euro 2016. He was his country's standout in the 1-0 final defeat to Portugal, attracting potential suitors for the wantaway, Championship-bound player.

"People are talking about 'this price' or 'this price' but we don't want to sell, so we haven't put any price," said Benitez.

"We are pleased with him. We know he finished the season in really good form for us - I made him the captain - so I rate him really highly."

Reports suggested that Newcastle had slapped a whopping £35 million on Sissoko's head after his exploits on the international stage, but that hasn't deterred the former Toulouse man in trying to engineer an exit from St James' Park.

"Newcastle would ask for £35 million? It could be 20 - for me it changes nothing," he said in a tweet. "The interested clubs will know how to find common ground. I hope that it will be as early as possible."

Sissoko's representatives were in talks with Hamburg before the European Championship began, but they stalled on making a deal.

"They said they wanted to wait and see what happens at the Euro," explained Hamburg CEO Dietmar Beiersdorfer.

Considering Sissoko's unexpectedly energetic performances at the tournament, Hamburg could now face significant competition from numerous outfits.

ESPN FC's Mark Rodden understands the 26-year-old would prefer to stay in England, and is eyeing the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, and Liverpool for a transfer.
