Patience pays off.

On Saturday, Carlos Kameni suffered a torn meniscus in Malaga's 3-3 draw versus Deportivo de la Coruna, resulting in Guillermo Ochoa finally making his La Liga debut, more than 19 months after he joined the Andalusian club.

For a 'keeper who possesses such quick reflexes and stood on his head while representing Mexico's national team at last year's World Cup, the debut felt long overdue. The Mexican shot-stopper could have been confused for a bench due to his lack of minutes, and many people in his position would have likely departed long ago.

Yet Ochoa is still at La Rosaleda Stadium, and, while he doesn't wish ill on his teammate, he understands that Kameni's injury presents him with an opportunity.

"I'm happy as I will have the chance to help the team directly, on the pitch," Ochoa said at a press conference on Wednesday. "Beforehand I did so indirectly; day to day, in training and whilst travelling. Now I will focus on enjoying this chance, and fulfilling the team's objectives, which we're close to doing."

Ochoa also didn't hesitate to point out the professionalism that he has exuded since arriving at Malaga, saying: "I was patient, this opportunity arose and I had to step up to the mark. I think I've behaved impeccably towards my teammates at all times, being professional on and off the pitch. I'm pleased that this possibility opened up for me, although it's not ideal due to the injury of my teammate, but it's happened and I feel ready, the same as the other members of the team. We work hard every day to be prepared for when the coach needs us."

There was also an admission from Ochoa in which he confessed to weighing the option of exiting Malaga. That, however, would have meant giving up on a dream in his eyes.

"I am here because of a decision I made," Ochoa said. "I wanted to stay in Spain, in Europe, both personally and from a footballing aspect. I had to assess every situation as you shouldn't give up on your dreams if you face obstacles in your career. You must fight, as in life, you face difficult situations which you must affront head on, step up and work hard, as this will open doors."

When Malaga welcomes Sporting de Gijon on Wednesday, the fixture will likely mark Ochoa's first La Liga start.
