"They traded blows. He takes (the phone) and calls (emergency number). It all happened very quickly," Tamaulipas state Attorney General Ismael Quintanilla told Alfredo Pena of the Associated Press.

Pulido, who'd been held hostage for a day, tussled with the man before reportedly taking his gun and the cellphone.

According to documents obtained by the AP, the Olympiacos player made multiple calls to the emergency number while still in the room with the captor. Pulido threatened and beat up the man until he revealed the location of the house so authorities could find them.

The drama was far from over when the authorities arrived, as Pulido told the operator what he was wearing so he wouldn't be mistaken for one of the suspects as police opened fire.

"(I am) very well, thank God," Pulido said while standing alongside Mexican official Egidio Torre Cantu. The footballer's hand was bandaged after smashing the window in order to escape.
