Dos Santos rejects call-up to Mexico's Copa America squad

Mexico selected a 23-man squad Tuesday ahead of this summer's Copa America Centenario and among two notable absentees was LA Galaxy attacker Giovani Dos Santos.

Hours after Juan Carlos Osorio released the list sans Dos Santos and Real Sociedad striker Carlos Vela, some clarity was provided on the absence of the attacking duo.

"Giovani himself declined the invitation," Osario said in a news conference Tuesday. "To be ethical, what was spoken about will stay between the two of us."

Dos Santos has scored five goals in seven matches with the Galaxy this season, and the former Villarreal standout is clearly focused on club over country, after the MLS schedule was tailored around the summer tournament with a break during the group stage.

Giovani's brother, Jonathan, was also left off the squad as he recovers from an Achilles tendon rupture.

In Vela's case, his absence from the 23-man squad was based on form, with Osorio and the former Arsenal player agreeing that rest would suit the player, who has scored just five goals in 35 La Liga matches this season.
