Rooney sits out training again, reportedly doubtful for qualifier vs. Estonia

England's national team may be without its captain for its final Euro 2016 qualifier at Wembley.

Wayne Rooney, who has tallied seven goals in England's qualifying campaign, including his record 50th with the Three Lions, missed a second consecutive training session Wednesday because of an ankle injury, sitting out alongside Danny Ings and Jonjo Shelvey.

The Press Association reports that Rooney is a "major doubt" for England's qualifier versus Estonia on Friday after picking up the knock in Manchester United's 3-0 defeat to Arsenal, and it is understood he has been in touch with United manager Louis van Gaal on the matter.

Of course, Rooney's absence wouldn't be particularly devastating, as England punched its ticket to Euro 2016 last month by virtue of a 6-0 thrashing against European minnow San Marino.

However, even if Rooney doesn't take the pitch, he is apparently still expected to attend the fixture in order to pick up his commemorative golden boot for breaking Sir Bobby Charlton's scoring record of 49 international goals.

A 20-metre flag with Rooney's image on it will also be crowd surfed at the match and the Football Association is planning on unveiling a mural of Rooney ahead of kickoff in one of the concourses at Wembley.
