Report: Arsenal confident in re-signing Ozil despite Barcelona rumours

Arsenal will go ahead with its plan of signing midfielder Mesut Ozil to an improved contract despite reports linking the German international to Barcelona, according to The Telegraph's Matt Law.

Reports in Spain and England on Saturday suggested that Ozil had rejected a new deal at Emirates Stadium in favour of a move to Camp Nou.

Ozil's agent apparently gave an interview with German newspaper Bild in which he admitted there had been contact between his client and other top clubs.

However, Law reveals Arsenal hasn't received any signs from Ozil's camp that he's looking to play his football elsewhere, or that he's unhappy with his present situation. The club intends to resume talks over a contract worth £180,000 a week - £50,000 more than he is earning this season, according to Law.

The 27-year-old is currently tied to the Gunners until June 2018.

If he were to explore a move back to Spain, it is claimed that his former club Real Madrid would have the right to veto any transfer. Whistleblower website Football Leaks posted a document purported to be the transfer agreement between Arsenal and Madrid over the sale of Ozil in 2013, and it includes an apparent buy-back clause. Madrid would have 48 hours to decide whether to match any bid from a Spanish club.
