Everton beats Newcastle 3-0 after 2 penalties from Barkley

LIVERPOOL, England (AP) Ross Barkley marked his 100th appearance in the English Premier League by converting two late penalties to complete Everton's 3-0 win over relegation-threatened Newcastle on Wednesday.

Aaron Lennon put Everton ahead in the 23rd minute, swiveling just inside the area after collecting Tom Cleverley's pass and placing a low shot inside the post.

The hosts peppered Newcastle's goal, hitting the goal frame three times through Barkley, Cleverley and when Jonjo Shelvey headed against his own bar.

Barkley secured a first victory since Dec. 26 for Everton from the penalty spot in the 88th after Lennon was fouled. The England midfielder converted another spot kick in injury time, dinking the ball down the middle after he was tripped by Jamaal Lascelles, who was sent off for the foul.

''100 games in the league at 22 is not easy to achieve and he is playing a big role in the team,'' Everton manager Roberto Martinez said of Barkley. ''Phenomenal footballer, phenomenal person. He took responsibility with both penalties and showed how he is an assured, technical footballer.''

Everton climbed to 11th place.

Newcastle, who spent $42 million in the winter transfer window in a bid to escape relegation, stayed third from bottom and has picked up just five points from the last eight games.

''It wasn't acceptable,'' said Newcastle coach Steve McClaren.
