Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard is "likely" to join the Colorado Rapids in the summer as negotiations to bring the United States international back to Major League Soccer remain "ongoing and positive," sources have told ESPNFC's Jeff Carlisle.

The Rapids have made Howard a priority after allowing All-Star Clint Irwin to join Toronto FC earlier this month. If Howard does decide to switch Merseyside for Denver, Carlisle notes he would command between $2 million and $3 million, more than any other goalkeeper in MLS.

On Monday, Everton manager Roberto Martinez denied reports linking Howard with a move.

"No, at the moment there is nothing," Martinez told Greg O'Keeffe of the Liverpool Echo. "There is nothing to comment on."

Colorado, however, is in a good position to make a run at the 36-year-old netminder. It has the top spot in the MLS allocation order after trading away draft picks in exchange for the No. 1 ranking.

Fans have criticised Howard's performances over the past couple of months, with Everton conceding the sixth-highest number of goals (34) in the Premier League this season.

Howard, whose current contract with the Toffees runs until 2018, has made more than 400 appearances for the club since 2006. Before crossing the pond, he played for the MetroStars - the predecessor to the New York Red Bulls - from 1998 to 2003. He then joined Manchester United, but lost the starter's role to Edwin van der Sar.
