Southampton's Maarten Stekelenburg to miss Saturday's match vs. Spurs

Dutch international shot-stopper Maarten Stekelenburg is set to miss Southampton's home match against Tottenham on Saturday with a toe injury.

The 33-year-old missed the Saints' 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace on the weekend, a result that could have been far worse were it not for the efforts of deputy Paulo Gazzaniga.

Nobody was more impressed with Gazzaniga than Southampton boss Ronald Koeman.

"Paulo did a great job and he will start again this Saturday because Maarten is still not available and still not on the pitch to have training sessions," Koeman told the club's website Thursday.

"We were very happy with his performance but that was last week and, like everybody, he has to perform. That’s what we expect for this Saturday."

The 23-year-old Argentine, who joined the Saints in 2012 from Gillingham, could be looking at an extended spell as the No. 1 at St. Mary's, as the club have not announced a timetable for Stekelenburg's return.
