Arsenal's shot-stopping summer signing Petr Cech has played with a protective helmet since a horrific incident during a 2007 Premier League match, though the Czech international contends he'd rather not wear it while he plays.

"I would be more confident if I had it off," Cech said, according to Sam Long of the Evening Standard.

Cech spent three months on the sidelines following a head injury suffered during a match between Chelsea and Reading, when Royals' winger Stephen Hunt fell on the the 33-year-old 'keepers head. Cech suffered a decompressed skull fracture as a result, requiring an operation where two metal plates were inserted in his head.

"If you like it or not, the helmet affects your surroundings," Cech continued, "You have your ears covered and it makes hearing worse."

Keen to play without the protective helmet eight years after that chilling moment at the Madjeski Stadium, Cech admits the decision to do so isn't his.

"But the doctor has forbidden me to take off the helmet."

Even with a helmet obstructing several of his faculties, Cech appears resigned to wearing the headpiece.

"If I did, I would not get insurance."

A summer signing from Chelsea, Cech has been a standout at the Emirates this season, with his six clean sheets in 12 Premier League matches approaching David James' record for most top-flight shutouts.
