United's Louis van Gaal: Lingard, Mata not speedy enough on wings

Louis van Gaal bemoans the lack of pace on the flanks for Manchester United, admitting that Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata lack the usual zip of a winger.

Despite Lingard's impressive performances in recent wins over CSKA Moscow and West Bromwich Albion, Van Gaal has suggested that he may opt for a quicker player on the wing in the near future.

"I have said already many times we need speed and creativity on the wings," Van Gaal said. "You have seen that now we play with Jesse Lingard and he is not the most speedy winger in the world and (Juan) Mata is also not the most speedy winger in the world.

"So first we must first finish that problem and then we can see how we play and how we are in balance with playing with speedy wingers.''

Memphis Depay joined for around £25 million in the summer, but the natural winger has since fallen out of favour with Van Gaal. With Adnan Januzaj currently out on loan with Borussia Dortmund, the United gaffer is interested in strengthening the position in January, though he appreciates that could be a tricky task.

"I want to buy a lot of players but not all the players I want are for sale," he said. "So there are a lot of factors in it."

After the international break United returns to action with a trip to Watford on November 21.
