Robson-Kanu: Wales qualifying for Euro 2016 finals is perfect tribute to Gary Speed

Wales needs just one point from its remaining two Group B fixtures to book its ticket to the Euro 2016 finals in France, regardless of results elsewhere.

Reading forward Hal Robson-Kanu believes advancing to a major tournament for the first time since 1958 would be a fitting tribute to late captain and manager, Gary Speed.

"When Gary Speed took over a number of years ago he came in and changed the environment in the football nation," the striker said to a pre-game media conference.

"Before that there wasn't really a desire to win, to be the best, and to do as well as you can.

"But Speedo really implemented that and, when he passed, Chris Coleman came in and has now really taken that on and beyond."

Speed tragically took his own life in November 2011 after a long battle with depression, and Coleman assumed the managerial role two months later.

"He's really taken the squad and the team forward and given us players the belief and desire to really achieve something," added Robson-Kanu.

"That is what we're on the verge of but, throughout the special moments we've had during the campaign, we've remembered the impact Speedo had when he came in. That will never be forgotten."

With the likes of Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and Ashley Williams in the squad, it seems like a golden era for the Welsh. Given the stellar names, Robson-Kanu is particularly delighted that fans have been singing his name as they're delighted with the relentless work-rate he displays for his country.

"It's some job getting a song for my name and credit to the Barry Horns band," said Robson-Kanu.

"It's a massive honour to have them singing my name like that.

"Being a national cult hero is special - but it's handy when you're playing next to Gareth Bale."

Wales travel to Bosnia-Herzegovina on Saturday before concluding Euro 2016 qualification action at home to Andorra on Tuesday.
