Back at Manchester United following the international break, which provided a welcome distraction from the last-minute collapse of his transfer to Real Madrid, David De Gea must, as Daniel Taylor of the Guardian put it, "clear his head and knuckle down."

The Spanish 'keeper reportedly may attempt to do so by putting pen to paper on a new deal.

According to BBC Sport, United and De Gea have opened contract talks, with the shot-stopper's agent (and the most powerful man in football), Jorge Mendes, attending the club's training complex on Thursday.

Both clubs pointed the finger at the other after De Gea's move to his hometown club fell through because the required paperwork was not filed in time to beat the Spanish transfer deadline.

De Gea, whose present deal is set to expire in 2016, has yet to take the pitch this Premier League season, as manager Louis van Gaal didn't want to include his name on team sheets until his future was sorted out. The 'keeper's next chance to leave United will be during the winter transfer window, which opens Jan. 2, 2016.

United's fixture versus Liverpool on Saturday could see De Gea make his season debut.
