Juan Mata vouches for transfer target and teammate David De Gea

Now that the dust has settled from another transfer period rife with controversy and change, clubs are forced to deal with the consequences of their moves - or in this case, deal with the fallout from moves they didn't make.

The David De Gea to Real Madrid saga was the summer's most discussed and most drawn-out transfer, disastrously falling apart at the last minute. It left Manchester United with a world-class shot-stopper it was sure to sell, and a Spanish international 'keeper whose future is no more certain than it was days ago.

Regardless of which side is at fault - rather, which club's explanation you choose to believe, whether it was Real Madrid's version of events or those of United - Louis van Gaal's squad still includes arguably the world's best shot-stopper, and you can't exactly blame him for not feeling wanted.

On international duty with the Spanish national team, fellow Red Devil Juan Mata had some insight on how his teammate was faring.

"He seems the same as ever to me. He’s calm, relaxed. He has a naturally calm personality. These have been difficult days but he is ok," the pint-sized midfielder told reporters, courtesy of the Guardian.

"It is good for him to be here with the national team, too. I think his personality will help. He is always calm. Even in moments of maximum pressure or stress he still plays well. His personality will help him on and off the pitch."

Spain will play two Euro 2016 qualifiers against Slovakia and Macedonia before Europe's major leagues reconvene the weekend of September 12th.

Whether De Gea will regain his starting role with United or will continue to deputize for summer signing Sergio Romero remains to be seen. Though, Mata is certain, whatever the outcome, that his countryman will perform his duties with competence.

"David is professional and he always will be. His desire and professionalism will remain intact. Any team in the world would be better off with him in it. The fans always support the team, all of us, and they will support him."

Mata continued, "He is a friend and he is very professional. I wish him the best and I am sure he will be fine. He will manage the situation."
