Manchester United 'keeper David De Gea named to Spain squad

In form or not, Manchester United's most expensive benchwarmer, David De Gea, has been named to the Spanish squad for Euro 2016 qualifiers against Slovakia and Macedonia.

Due to boundless rumours that the lanky, Madrid-born shot-stopper is poised for a move to his hometown club, Real Madrid, United manager Louis van Gaal has not played De Gea, opting instead for summer signing Sergio Romero.

But despite De Gea's lack of playing time, Spanish gaffer Vicente del Bosque appears unconcerned.

"It's true that he hasn't been playing competitively, which normally is required, but we are also at the beginning of the season," del Bosque told reporters, according to Sky Sports.

"He is active, he is training and, like others who are not necessarily first-choice with their teams, we think that at the moment he can come. If the situation drags on, then we might have to reconsider."

It's hard to question the judgment of the gaffer who won the 2010 World Cup, Spain's first, though even with De Gea's recall, it's unclear if he'll play considering captain Iker Casillas' return to the fold.

Joining De Gea will be his United teammate Juan Mata, as well as seven other players who currently ply their trade in the Premier League.

Spain named both their senior and Under-21 sides Friday, with a full list of the former below.
