Liverpool agree to deal with James Milner on free transfer from Manchester City

Liverpool have agreed to terms with James Milner on a free transfer from Manchester City.

The transfer is subject to a medical and will not be made official until Milner's contract with Manchester City expires July 1.

Exact terms of the deal were not disclosed, but various media outlets suggest Milner will sign a long-term contract with the Merseyside team.

Milner will fill the void in Liverpool's midfield created when Steven Gerrard departed for the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer.

The move also creates a fresh environment to flourish after Milner grew frustrated by a lack of playing time in Manchester.

Milner is currently with the English national team, where's he's earned 53 caps, and will be available for the country's upcoming friendly against the Republic of Ireland and the Euro 2016 qualifier against Slovenia.

He began his career with Leeds United before moving on to Newcastle United in 2004. Following a loan move to Aston Villa, Milner signed with the Midlands club in 2008 and was sold to Manchester City for a reported £26 million in 2010.

The 29-year-old scored five goals and made seven assists during 18 Premier League starts under manager Manuel Pellegrini.
