Report: Manchester City offers James Milner new contract worth £130,000 per week

Manchester City is making a final push to retain the services of versatile midfielder James Milner.

Multiple outlets report that the club has extended Milner an expensive olive branch in the hopes of keeping him at the Etihad, offering a new four-year deal that would pay the Englishman £130,000 per week - and up to £165,000 with incentives.

Milner, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the season, has garnered interest from a collection of European clubs - including Arsenal and Liverpool - since rejecting a four-year offer from City 12 months ago. He cited a lack of playing time as his reason for looking elsewhere.

The 29-year-old was a seldom-used squad member last season, making just 12 starts, but has been a vital part of Manuel Pellegrini's plans this year, getting the nod in 27 matches (and making 44 appearances in all competitions).

Aside from his being one of the team's better performers in an otherwise disappointing season, the retention of Milner would be an important step in City's attempt to continue abiding by the Premier League's homegrown player quota, particularly with the guaranteed departure of Frank Lampard this summer.

If the club is unable to broker a new agreement with the midfielder, they will get nothing in return for a player they forked out £26 million to acquire from Aston Villa in 2010.
