Six of the Premier League's best players were announced as finalists for the Professional Footballers' Association Players' annual Player of the Year award.

Diego Costa, Philippe Coutinho, David De Gea, Eden Hazard, Harry Kane, and Alexis Sanchez were nominated as the league's top players and each has a chance to capture their first Player of the Year award.

Hazard came close to winning last year's honour, but was runner-up to Luis Suarez after his terrific final season with Liverpool.

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero was one of the few surprising omissions from the list. However, injuries could be to blame after he was forced to miss several weeks through the holiday period following his blistering start with the defending Premier League champions.

Meanwhile, Tottenham's Kane has a chance to take home two awards after being nominated for the association's Young Player of the Year award as well following his breakout season, where he's in a share for the league scoring record with Costa.

De Gea, whose registered 10 clean sheets, has a chance to become the first goalkeeper to win the award since Peter Shilton accomplished the feat with Nottingham Forest in 1978.
