Petr Cech on being Thibaut Courtois's understudy: 'That can work for 1 season only'
Don't expect to see Petr Cech at Stamford Bridge next season if Thibaut Courtois is Jose Mourinho's first-choice 'keeper.
In conversation with Sky Sports, Cech addressed the situation he finds himself in at Chelsea, which has seen the 32-year-old shot-stopper make only five Premier League appearances this campaign as Mourinho consistently opts to start Courtois.
"I don't know what the club's idea will be," Cech said. "It looks like it works well with me and Thibaut as a duo. But that can work for one season only. I don't want another like this."
Cech's assessment is more than justified given a comparison of the two players' per-90-minute metrics in the Premier League, which illustrate just how well the Czech 'keeper plays when he receives minutes, and serves as a reminder that he's kept a clean sheet in all five of his appearances this season.
PER-90-MINUTE METRIC | PETR CECH | THIBAUT COURTOIS |
---|---|---|
Clean Sheets | 1.05 | 0.33 |
Goals Conceded | 0 | 1.03 |
Saves | 1.26 | 2.1 |
Saves Per Goal | 6 | 2.13 |
Distribution Accuracy | 56% | 59% |
Punches | 0.42 | 0.37 |
Catches | 0.63 | 3.67 |
One year will remain on Cech's contract at the end of the season.
