Liverpool wants James Milner, and they may not even have to pay for him.

The Reds are "increasingly confident" in their ability to sign the versatile midfielder at the end of the season, reports Richard Jolly of ESPN FC, at which point he will be a free agent should he not agree to a new deal with Manchester City.

The Citizens have been in talks with the 29-year-old for some time now over a new contract. While manager Manuel Pellegrini remains confident the situation will be resolved, recent reports suggest the two sides are still a long way off from an agreement.

Milner, who was little more than a bit-part player in the years immediately following his move from Aston Villa in 2010, has been a monumental part of City's current campaign, seeing increased playing time following injuries to the likes of Sergio Aguero, David Silva and Samir Nasri.

The Englishman has made 29 appearances in all competitions this season, and has been used in a multitude of positions by Pellegrini, even seeing time in the false nine role during Aguero's absence.

His five Premier League assists put him second on the team behind only Jesus Navas, as Milner has showcased an ability to be a legitimate attacking threat - something he was long derided for being incapable of contributing.
