Report: Manchester City's Lampard expected to be fit for Chelsea clash

Reuters

Frank Lampard's return to Stamford Bridge may take place Jan. 31 after all.

The Manchester City midfielder suffered a hip injuring during a friendly game against Hamburg on Wednesday, resulting in fears he could miss the opportunity to face his old club, Chelsea.

Manager Manuel Pellegrini described the decision to remove Lampard from the match as precautionary, and it now appears Chelsea's all-time leading scorer will be available for the season's most significant match between the two Premier League title contenders, according to the Daily Mail.

Lampard played a critical role in the last match against his old club when he came on as a substitute and netted the equalizer in a 1-1 final at the Etihad Stadium.

He's been a surprisingly productive contributor off the bench for City, with five Premier League goals after 17 appearances.

Manchester will need to produce a positive result to remain in the title race, as they trail Chelsea by five points for top spot in the standings.
