Wenger confident Welbeck can succeed playing out wide

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger isn't concerned about Danny Welbeck's ability to produce should he be shifted out to a wide position.

With striker Olivier Giroud fully recovered from a broken leg and his return to the lineup imminent, conventional wisdom suggests that Welbeck will be shifted out to the wing in order for Wenger to get both men in the starting lineup.

Welbeck made it clear upon his departure from Manchester United this summer that one of the main motivations was the opportunity to play in his preferred role as a central striker - something the Red Devils could not - or, more accurately - would not, offer him.

Despite that, Wenger seems unperturbed by the possibility that he may have to put the gangly Englishman back into a position that he obviously would like to avoid in order to accommodate his returning attacker.

"You have players who play on the flanks who score goals. I don't think that will stop him from scoring," Wenger was quoted as saying by ESPN FC. "He had chances the other night when he played on the left, with his pace.

"(Cristiano) Ronaldo played all his life on the flanks and scored more goals than games he played. I don't think that will stop him. What is a problem for him is to play.''

"Recently we played 4-4-2 with Sanchez and him up front, and in some games you adapt. Danny is adaptable -- the modern player is adaptable," the Arsenal bench boss added.

"Sanchez can play wide left and wide right as well as through the middle. Welbeck as well."
