Mark Schwarzer thinks FIFA won't switch Qatar 2022 World Cup until '2 or 3 people drop dead'

Marred by allegations of corruption and fears over scorching summer temperatures, the decision to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar is being viewed as more and more of a mistake with each passing day.

Regarding the issue of temperatures, the European Club Association (ECA) proposed earlier this week that the tournament be moved to January and February in order to avoid the sweltering heat, although chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge also declared that the ECA won't foot the bill if it's moved to a different time of a year.

On Friday, Chelsea 'keeper Mark Schwarzer echoed Rummenigge's stance on the matter, based off his experience playing in the Middle East, saying that it will take "two or three people to drop dead" before FIFA realizes that Qatar is not a suitable World Cup host.

"People complain about it being too hot," said Schwarzer, speaking at the Leaders in Sports conference in London. "I've played World Cup qualifiers there in June, and it is hot. I played a game in Oman in June one year and it was 43 degrees.

"Something needs to happen to stop games at that time of year. It is just ridiculous, and it will only happen once probably not just one person but two or three people drop dead. That's unfortunate, but that's probably the only way they will do anything. It's ridiculous, it really is ridiculous to be playing at that time of year and I don't know why there's even a debate.

"A committee went out there and said it was not safe to play, yet they were still awarded it."
