Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger on Olivier Giroud's contract extension: 'It is agreed'
Olivier Giroud may be recovering from a broken tibia at the moment, but that hasn't deterred Arsenal from offering him a contract extension.
It was reported Monday that the Gunners and the French striker agreed to a new deal that will keep Giroud in London through 2018, and manager Arsene Wenger confirmed today that an agreement is in place, despite the lack of an official announcement from the club.
Via ESPN FC, the manager continued:
It is done. We want stability and to keep the core of our team together. Giroud is an important player here. It is agreed. When it is completely done, we will announce it.
We want stability and we want to keep the core of our team together because I am a great believer in that. We have a young bunch of players now, and the core of our team is now basically young English talents, and I believe as well that Giroud is an important player here.
Giroud, 28, has been subjected to plenty of criticism since joining the club from Montpellier in 2012, but the fact remains that he is the best striker in the squad, and this announcement reflects that.
