Manchester City without Aguero, Silva and 4 others for cup match vs. Sheffield Wednesday

Dealing with a rash of minor injuries this week, Manchester City will field a makeshift lineup for tomorrow's Capital One Cup match against Sheffield Wednesday.

Manager Manuel Pellegrini confirmed that he will be without six players when the club begins its defense of the league cup crown tomorrow at the Etihad.

Here's a rundown of the infirmary:

  • Sergio Aguero - knee
  • David Silva - ankle
  • Samir Nasri - groin
  • Stevan Jovetic - hamstring
  • Fernando - groin

Defender Pablo Zabaleta is suspended for the contest after being shown a red card on the weekend against Chelsea.

Jovetic and Fernando have been on the treatment table for some time now, with the former suffering his injury earlier this month on international duty, while the latter has not played since August.

Pellegrini did note that none of the new ailments appear overly serious, which will come as a great relief to City supporters.

“I think David and Sergio will recover without any problems for Saturday, Stevan will maybe be ready but if he cannot play on Saturday he will be ready for Tuesday.  Fernando and Nasri will wait until next week," he said.

City is embarking on a tough stretch that will see the club play seven matches in 21 days. The fact that all of the injured players should be able to return to action in short order certainly bodes well.

Despite having one of the deepest squads in the game, losing players of that ilk for an extended period of time would be a difficult hurdle to overcome.
