Report: Manchester United will continue big spending in January transfer window

The summer transfer window saw Manchester United open their wallet to the tune of £150.1 million on new signings, an expensive sum that saw six headline players arrive at Old Trafford.

  • Angel Di Maria (£59.7 million)
  • Ander Herrera (£28 million)
  • Luke Shaw (£27 million)
  • Marcos Rojo (£16 million)
  • Daley Blind (£14 million)
  • Radamel Falcao (£6 million loan fee)

However, as expensive as those acquisitions were, United reportedly aren't done building their squad.

According to the Guardian, United plan to follow up their summer splurge with further strengthening in the January transfer window as Louis Van Gaal has a sizeable sum at his disposal and is free to invest it as he wishes.

Specifically, Van Gaal, who is apparently pleased with how United handled business during the summer transfer window, will look to acquire a "top-line central midfielder and central defender."

Roma's Kevin Strootman could reportedly be that central midfielder if he recovers from a serious knee injury that's kept him on the sidelines since March. The 24-year-old played under Van Gaal when the latter was managing the Dutch national team, and bringing Strootman to Old Trafford would likely cost United something in the range of £30 million.

Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels could reportedly be that central defender, although any transfer for the 25-year-old would be more likely to occur next summer as opposed to mid-season. Hummels was targeted by Van Gaal before the transfer window closed, but Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp didn't want to lose another major player after Robert Lewandowski's departure to Bayern Munich.
