Tottenham signs Ben Davies and Michel Vorm from Swansea, give up Gylfi Sigurdsson in swap deal

Tottenham and Swansea City combined Wednesday to execute a pair of deals, one thought to be a straight swap while the other sees Spurs add even more depth to an already strong position between the posts.

In Vorm, Tottenham are getting a reliable goalkeeper that will be able to push Hugo Lloris. That said, the Dutch international was said to have some reservations about the move, related to a potential lack of playing time. It's not hard to understand why. Lloris is one of the premiere goalkeepers in the Premier League, and will see a large majority of the action this season.

From both the perspective of Vorm and the club, this is an odd move.

Davies, however, will likely contribute plenty this season at White Hart Lane. At just 21 years old, the left-back is one of the better defensive prospects in the league, and his inclusion in the squad will allow Jan Vertonghen to shift back into his more natural role at center-back after spending much of the past season on the left side.

The Welshman had spent 13 years at Swansea, having joined the club's academy as an eight-year-old, and offered a heartfelt message to the team and its fans upon the announcement that he would be heading to London.

I’ll be back to watch the boys when I can from the stand. It was sad saying my goodbyes because they’ve been great with me from the first day I joined the squad. But in the end it was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down.

His attention then turned to his new club:

Sigurdsson, meanwhile, returns to the club after a two-year spell at Tottenham. The Icelandic midfielder scored seven goals in 18 matches during his first spell in Wales back in 2011-12, and becomes the Swans' third signing of the summer, joining goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski and striker Bafetimbi Gomis.

While all three players have officially moved for undisclosed fees, it is expected that Sigurdsson and Davies have switched clubs in a straight swap.
