What is there left to play for in the Premier League?

Darren Staple / Reuters

Despite all the “drama”, much of it involving epic, unexpected collapses from big teams against inferior opponents, there is little left to salvage from the final Premier League match day of the 2013-14 season. All the fanfare about posting all the final matches on as many channels as NBC could afford to disrupt when the network first won the rights to the English top flight now looks faintly ridiculous.

If you want a fairly bad and misleading look at NBC’s Premier League ratings, read this.

Anyhoo, the matches worth watching of course for the title race on Sunday are Liverpool vs Newcastle and Manchester City vs West Ham, both at 10:00 AM EST. The only realistic way this weekend ends with Man City not Premier League champions is if West Ham beat City and Liverpool beats Newcastle. The other way involves Man City drawing and Liverpool scoring 14 unanswered goals.

As for the relegation fight, the only way Norwich City could stay up is if West Brom loses to Stoke and the Canaries beat Arsenal in such a way that cancels out what is currently a 17 goal differential between West Brom and Norwich. Har har.

What about the Europa League qualification you ask? First, a breakdown of how qualification works.

Everton have qualified by essentially guaranteeing 5th place. Hull have the second spot as they’re FA Cup finalists (Arsenal are already in the CL). And since League cup Manchester City have also qualified for the Champions League, that leaves whomever finishes in 6th. If Man United beat Southampton away and Spurs lose to Aston Villa, United will qualify for the Europa League.

All this Premier League malarkey will seem quaint though against the prospect of second leg Championship playoffs business at 12:15 PM on Sunday, with Derby playing Brighton with a 2-1 aggregate score.

As for Spain, well, you know the fixtures to look for. The La Liga schedule doesn’t finish until May 18th, but Elche vs Barca at 1:00 PM Sunday is a big one, kicking off at the same time as Atletico vs Malaga. If both teams win then it sets up an incredible finish when Atletico faces Barcelona on the final day of the season on May 18th.
