Mark Schwarzer: Loses in Rare Premier League Start
Schwarzer started Saturday's Premier League match against Sunderland and made only one save in a shocking 1-2 defeat at Stamford Bridge.
Analysis:
With Chelsea playing Tuesday against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League semifinal and then against Liverpool at Anfield the following weekend, manager Jose Mourinho decided to give regular keeper Petr Cech the day off. That came back to bite him, as Schwarzer and the Chelsea defense could not keep Sunderland at bay. Schwarzer is a solid goalkeeper in his own right, but he's nowhere near on the level of Cech, or Thibault Courtois, who is on loan at Atletico this season.
