Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney will feature in Sunday's EFL Cup final against Southampton, according to manager Jose Mourinho.

While it's not clear what role he'll play, Mourinho said Friday that Rooney will be "involved" in the match after overcoming a minor injury, according to ESPN FC's Mark Ogden.

Rooney managed to return to training earlier this week, but was excluded from the 20-man squad ahead of United's Europa League win over Saint-Etienne on Wednesday as uncertainty over his future at the club began to spiral out of control.

However, Rooney quelled speculation regarding a possible move to China when he released a statement Thursday stating that he will remain at United this season and is prepared to "fight on four fronts."

After confirming Rooney will take part in Sunday's contest, Mourinho told a news conference, "This should be the last question about Rooney until end of season. He stays, he wants to help us win trophies.

"I said I would be happy if the decision, but yes, he is fine and trains with the team. He didn't go to Saint-Etienne, but no doubt, he is involved in the game on Sunday."

Michael Carrick, who was also an injury doubt after the Saint-Etienne match, will be available for selection as well after recovering from a calf knock.

Meanwhile, Henrikh Mkhitaryan won't get to feature in his first final with United. Mourinho ruled the Armenia international out of the tie because of a hamstring knock that he picked up during Wednesday's Europa League win.

Phil Jones' status will not be known until Saturday, Mourinho added.
