Weird week in football: Mic drops and hip hop

Tony O'Brien / Reuters

Every Monday, theScore will highlight the most outlandish moments from the wacky, sometimes daft, and perennially entertaining world of European football. Here's what made us smile - or cringe - on the pitch this past week.

My word, have we got a varied selection of the outlandish and eccentric for you this week, so without further ado, the Weird Week in Football:

Bilic blows a gasket

Incensed by West Ham's late compromise with West Brom thanks to a Gareth McAuley injury-time leveller, Irons boss Slaven Bilic took out his anger on a pitch-side mic.

Bilic was sent to the stands for his efforts, representing the English top-flight's biggest affront to microphones since the whimsical stylings of Glenn Hoddle and Chris Waddle.

Kallstrom return busts the 'net

Kim Kallstrom, he of the four appearances for Arsenal and subsequent FA Cup winner's medal, signed up for a return to Stockholm side Djurgardens during the January window, and naturally, it crashed the club's website.

Veltman's cheeky chicanery fools opponent

During Ajax's weekend victory over Sparta Rotterdam, full-back Joel Veltman displayed some masterful deception skills when he pointed at a collapsed teammate long enough to speed past winger Ivan Calero.

Luckily for Veltman, nothing came of a subsequent limp cross into the area, though Ajax would go on to win 2-0 courtesy of a dizzying effort from on-loan Chelsea forward and Burkina Faso darling Bertrand Traore.

Piety rewarded with pies and pints

After being sent to the stands for impropriety during a clash with Cheltenham in December, fourth-tier Morecambe's gaffer Jim Bentley was slapped with a £1,000 fine by the FA.

Supporters of the Shrimps were quick to cover the fee for Bentley's rager, and the player-cum-manager, who made over 300 appearances for the Lancashire lot, returned the favour during this past weekend's match with Cambridge with some help from league sponsor SkyBet.

Pints and pies for all in attendance is precisely what the doctor (presumably not a cardiologist) ordered, with SkyBet chipping in as Morecambe supporters enjoyed two to the good, and the club replicated that effort by topping The U's 2-0.

From Real to rap: the Royston Drenthe story

Remember Royston Drenthe? The once-promising Dutch left-sided runner ended a bizarre career arc with Abu Dhabi side Baniyas in 2016, though that doesn't mean the 29-year-old has stopped working.

After listening to his brand new Dutch language rap offering, "Paranoia," we at the Weird Week in Football are questioning his latest endeavor. In all fairness to Drenthe, his career did suffer from noted bouts with anxiety, especially with Real Madrid, so here's hoping his post-playing career has better results than his mercurial days as a footballer.

Only feels right that the Weird Week would kick-off and end with some microphone abuse. Cheers!
