3 things we learned in the Premier League this weekend

With another round of Premier League action in the books, we take a look back at what happened in the English top flight over the weekend.

Rooney: Record breaker

Take a bow, Wayne Rooney.

The Scouser was introduced in the Potteries to try to address Manchester United's wastefulness in attack, and he did so in spectacular fashion with a 94th-minute free-kick.

Taking a point from Stoke City in a 1-1 draw is disappointing considering the balance of play, but that didn't take away from Rooney surpassing Sir Bobby Charlton's club scoring record with his 250th strike.

Whether this feat firmly lodges Rooney among Ryan Giggs, Charlton, and Paul Scholes in the loftiest legion of United legends remains to be seen - he has handed in two transfer requests during his time in Stretford - but he can certainly be deemed an all-time Premier League great.

Liverpool sunk by Swans

It was meant to be a match which would return Liverpool to goal-scoring form after just two goals in its previous four matches, but Swansea City, inspired by the industry and artistry of new boy Tom Carroll, defied the odds to take a 3-2 win from Anfield.

If the Reds are spluttering, with the loss at Sadio Mane to the Africa Cup of Nations leaking gas from the attacking engine, either the training intensity will have to slacken - Jurgen Klopp is unlikely to do that - or the peripheral members of the squad (including the talented throng of youngsters) have to step up.

But this was Swansea's day. Fernando Llorente bagged a brace, with his second finishing a particularly pretty move involving fresh acquisitions Martin Olsson and Carroll on the left flank, and the irreplaceable Gylfi Sigurdsson claimed the winner.

After an unexpected three points taken on Merseyside, Swansea hauled itself from bottom place and out of the relegation zone.

Jesus not quite City's saviour

A beguiling 82nd-minute introduction from Gabriel Jesus - a fan favourite after a cut-back, looped header, and disallowed goal in little over a minute - was not enough to earn a deserved victory for Manchester City, allowing Tottenham Hotspur to leave Eastlands with a point.

Considering how City's previous outing went - a 4-0 reverse at Everton - many of its supporters would've probably settled for a draw before kick-off, but Tottenham's ruthlessness in the sparse opportunities it had keeps it well in the title hunt.

The resurgence of Dele Alli has been monumental in the recent form from Mauricio Pochettino's throng. The England international, 20, is thriving since working closer and in tandem with Harry Kane, showing an impeccable timing to meet the often unerringly accurate deliveries from the full-backs or Christian Eriksen.

There's an appetising list of meetings coming up for Spurs, with a trip to Liverpool representing the only top-six side on the agenda in the next 12 Premier League matches.

Around the grounds

Granit Xhaka received his second dismissal of the season, Francis Coquelin showed his erratic flaws when he conceded a penalty, Arsene Wenger lost the plot - but still, Arsenal managed to eke out a contentious 2-1 win at the Emirates Stadium.

It was the second time Laurent Koscielny was involved in a controversial winner against Burnley: scoring at the death at Turf Moor in October with a clear handball and hint of offside, and then appearing in an offside position in the lead up to Arsenal's awarding of a last-ditch penalty. Alexis Sanchez made no mistake from the spot.

The numbers make sorry reading for fallen champion Leicester City, as Claudio Ranieri's men limped to a 3-0 loss at Southampton in Sunday's early kick-off. James Ward-Prowse was a standout for the host, but there will be defensive concerns after Virgil van Dijk appeared to sustain an ankle injury, just days after captain Jose Fonte chose to move to West Ham United.
