Rooney: It's a 'huge honour' to break scoring record

Back in February 2012, Wayne Rooney took to Twitter, expressing his desire to become Manchester United's all-time leading scorer. At the time, the English attacker was 81 goals behind Sir Bobby Charlton's tally of 249.

On Saturday, nearly five years later, Rooney finally surpassed Sir Bobby, scoring his 250th goal for United in the Red Devils' 1-1 Premier League draw at Stoke City. The record-breaking strike came in the 94th minute, when the 31-year-old curled a free-kick past the Potters' wall and into the far corner of goal.

Speaking after the final whistle, Rooney acknowledged the pride he felt in becoming United's all-time top scorer, but admitted the occasion was "a bit dampened" by the Red Devils' inability to exit bet365 Stadium with a victory.

"A bit strange to be honest," Rooney told MUTV. "I think it would've been nice if it was the winning goal. Just a little bit of disappointment in not picking up three points. But there's no denying it. It's a proud moment for me, a huge honour to get that record. It's just a bit dampened by the result.

"To be honest I wasn't aware of how long was left in the game. I just wanted to try and get back to the halfway line and try and push for a second goal. We didn't have much time left. I'm disappointed in the result, but it's a proud day for me."

The record was equalled during United's 4-0 victory over Reading in the FA Cup's third round, as Rooney deflected a ball from Juan Mata past Ali Al Habsi. Whereas Sir Bobby required 758 fixtures to score 249 goals, the product of Everton only needed 543 matches to hit the mark.

Rooney's first goal for United came on Sept. 28, 2004, which also marked his Red Devils debut at just 18 years of age. He would go on to notch a hat-trick in the fixture, a 6-2 win against Fenerbahce in the Champions League.
