Independiente may have to wait until 2020 to get Sergio Aguero back.

The Argentinian striker has agreed a contract extension at Manchester City, according to his manager, Pep Guardiola, meaning the rehashed paperwork ties him to the Etihad Stadium for three-and-a-half years.

"He has already signed a contract extension. Sergio will be here until he decides not to be here," Guardiola told Sky Sports, vanquishing speculation that Aguero may be sacrificed in the Spaniard's revolution after the pair were spotted in a restaurant together on Thursday.

"He is our best striker - we have a problem with goals so we need him. What I want is the best possible for him."

The 28-year-old has been unabashed about his intention "to retire at Independiente" - both his hometown club and where he made his first strides in professional football - in the past, but his promise to return in 2019 over a year ago has now been delayed by another 12 months. If he sees out the duration of his City terms, he'll be turning 32 when he holds up the red of Independiente again.

"We didn't speak about the contract," Guardiola said of the rumours of a contract standoff or potential exit for Aguero. "He has a lot of money and wanted to invite his coach to have dinner. That's all."

City began the season with six consecutive victories before dropping Premier League points under Guardiola for the first time in a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at the start of October.

Since the first whistle of that clash, City's goal output has been halved. The Eastlands outfit will be hoping Aguero returns to a Premier League scoresheet for the first time since Jan. 2 when Spurs visit City on Saturday.
