Report: Vertonghen set to miss 2 months with ankle ligament damage
Tottenham is set to be without first-choice centre-half Jan Vertonghen for an extended spell after the Belgian international reportedly suffered ankle ligament damage during a weekend drubbing of West Brom.
After Vertonghen underwent a scan Tuesday, the Guardian's Dominic Fifield suggests he is likely to miss two months.
Spurs may have left White Hart Lane with their heads high after the comprehensive 4-0 win over a traditionally defensive-minded Baggies lot, though that is certain to change in light of Vertonghen's injury.
The Ajax product turned his left ankle as he extended to keep the ball in play on the touchline, prompting tears as he hobbled down the tunnel in the 64th minute.
A similar injury saw the 29-year-old miss last summer's Euro 2016 tournament.
With Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino switching to a back three of late with wingers Kyle Walker and Danny Rose playing in more advanced positions, the Argentine gaffer will have to make a decision: change the formation or opt for out-of-favour Austrian international Kevin Wimmer.
After appearing in a scant 10 Premier League matches for Tottenham last season following a move from FC Koln, Wimmer has been glued to the north London bench this campaign, featuring in just three league tilts.
Pochettino could also give emerging American centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers a chance, especially after the Southend-born 19-year-old made a good account of himself in a back three with Wimmer and Toby Alderweireld in the FA Cup against Aston Villa.
