Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has been given a five-match suspension and has been fined £100,000 by the English Football Association (FA) on charges of "using abusive and/or insulting words" toward an opponent in the 87th minute of a match against Wolverhampton last Saturday.
The FA charge is specified as a breach of Rule E3(2) - comments that included reference to ethnic origin, race, and/or nationality.
Shelvey was also ordered to attend an FA education course but the club has seven days to consider an appeal. Until that time, the sanction has been set aside.
The FA adds it will publish a receipt of written reasons for the charge "in due course."
