Gerrard eventually hopes to take on managerial role

Steven Gerrard announced his retirement from football after a 19-year career at Liverpool and the LA Galaxy on Thursday, and while his playing days are over, Gerrard isn't ready to leave football just yet.

Speaking to Gary Lineker for BT Sport, Gerrard revealed he intends to enter the world of management, though he's in no particular rush.

"I am excited about the future and feel I still have a lot to offer the game, in whatever capacity that may be," Gerrard said, as quoted by Rob Harris of the Associated Press.

"I am currently taking my time to consider a number of options and will make an announcement with regards to the next stage of my career very soon.

"I definitely have dreams and aspirations of having a go at management or assisting the manager and being back involved in the dressing room. But I've got many, many years to do that."

The 36-year-old was linked to a managerial role with MK Dons in the English League One but said it was "a bit too soon" for him.

But the decision to retire was not one he made hastily.

Gerrard said he felt the call to step away during his second season with the LA Galaxy, his first full year in Major League Soccer.

"You are aware that time is coming towards the end, the body starts talking to you," Gerrard explained. "The pains and the aches get more regular. The way you feel out there on the pitch changes.

"Over the last couple of years I've felt myself slowing down a little bit and I basically can't deliver what I used to be able to deliver and that becomes a little frustrating as time goes on."
