Chelsea will offer former midfielder Frank Lampard an ambassadorial or coaching role if the 38-year-old decides to retire from football, according to the Guardian's Dominic Fifield.

Lampard - who announced Monday he will leave New York City FC at the end of the year - indicated he will soon reveal the "next stage" of his career. Whether he still feels he can play competitively is unclear, but Chelsea is apparently ready to welcome back its record-maker.

Lampard could also take up a media gig, much like contemporaries Thierry Henry, Jamie Carragher, and Gary Neville, but Chelsea is a realistic destination for Lampard once he hangs up his boots.

The club has maintained a close relationship with some of its biggest players, hiring Carlo Cudicini as an assistant and Eddie Newtown, Paulo Ferreira, and Tore Andre Flo as ambassadors.

The Blues also tried to recruit Didier Drogba last year, as Guus Hiddink took the reins on an interim basis.

Lampard - Chelsea's all-time leading scorer with 211 goals in 648 appearances - left west London in 2014 and signed with NYCFC soon after. He joined Manchester City on loan and remained there for the 2014-15 season, before returning to New York.
