Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata got the party started in this League Cup derby fixture against rival Manchester City, rounding off an attacking move started by Zlatan Ibrahimovic with a deft touch and a well-placed shot.

Ibrahimovic sent a pass into the box for Ander Herrera, but Herrera collided with Fernandinho as both fell and the ball rolled to an onrushing Mata. The Spaniard then beat Willy Caballero on his near side.

It gave the Red Devils a 1-0 lead to defend right before the hour mark.
