Klopp: Karius is Liverpool's No. 1 goalkeeper

Though he has started each of the past five matches, Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius has officially been named Jurgen Klopp's No. 1.

Heading into the Premier League season, there were questions as to whether summer signing Karius would replace the error-prone Simon Mignolet in goal.

The former Mainz shot-stopper broke his hand in a preseason friendly, allowing Mignolet to keep his place for the start of the season.

But Karius hasn't lost any of his games since getting the nod Sept. 20 against Derby County.

He's allowed just three goals since then.

"In this moment, we have a No. 1 and that is Loris Karius," Klopp told reporters. "That's the situation. I cannot leave them in doubt. There was a short moment when we gave him (Karius) time to see a little more of him."

The Liverpool boss said he broke the news to both of his goalkeepers after the October international break.

Mignolet, however, will start Tuesday's League Cup tie against Tottenham - an indication that the Belgian will retain cup responsibilities.

"The chance of him starting is 100 percent if nothing happens in training," Klopp added. "It is a luxury problem for me. I made the decision and of course he was not happy about it, but he is a really good professional."
