Manchester United defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah has agreed a new contract in Stretford which ties him to the club until 2020, with an option to extend for a further year.

Reports surfaced earlier in October that the Dutch talent, 18, had shook hands on fresh terms, ending speculation over his future due to him only being secured until the end of the current campaign.

"Tim is a young player with great potential," said manager Jose Mourinho, who had just fielded the highly regarded and versatile Fosu-Mensah in meetings with Northampton Town and Zorya Luhansk.

"I am pleased that he has signed a new contract and I am delighted at the progress he has made so far. It is clear to see that he is learning every day in training, and there will be plenty of opportunities for him as the season continues."

Amid questions over the club's youth programme due to derisory results from the various age brackets, Fosu-Mensah, along with Marcus Rashford, could comprise of the only players to progress from the academy to the senior setup for some time.

Fosu-Mensah joined United in 2014 after he spent his formative years in the famed Ajax system.

"I am delighted to have signed a new contract here at Manchester United," Fosu-Mensah shared. "I have enjoyed every minute since I joined this great club and I want to continue the progress that I feel I have made so far.

"I am learning every day from the manager and the coaching staff. I appreciate the trust that the club has in me and I want to repay that with my performances on the pitch."

Fosu-Mensah will be hoping for inclusion in United's Europa League visit from Fenerbahce on Thursday.
