Baines' penalty gives Everton 1-0 win over Stoke

Everton recorded a second win in as many games as they beat Stoke City 1-0 at Goodison Park on Saturday thanks to Leighton Baines' penalty.

The left back hammered the spot kick home in the 53rd minute, largely thanks to the post and the back of Shay Given's head. It was a well-deserved win for the hosts, who were the better side for the majority of the game with Ross Barkley and Mason Holgate shining.

The Toffees (2-1-0) started off well but didn't create much in the way of chances until the 25th minute, when Ashley Williams' header looked set to give his side the lead until Peter Crouch cleared off the line. Moments later, Romelu Lukaku saw his effort also blocked on the line.

Everton got their goal shortly after the break when Williams was dragged down in the area, leading to Michael Oliver pointing to the spot and Baines duly converting the penalty.

Stoke (0-1-2) had their biggest chance came on the hour mark as Marko Arnautovic crashed an effort onto the bar with Maarten Stekelenburg beaten. Later chances went begging for the hosts with Barkley seeing his one-on-one effort saved and Lukaku having a point-blank range shot blocked.

The win sees Everton rise to second while Stoke now prop up the table at rock bottom.
