Premier League roundup: Conte shakes Chelsea out of slumber

With another round of Premier League action in the books, we take a look back at what happened in the English top flight this weekend.

Liverpool burned

After thrilling and frustrating its way to a 4-3 win at Arsenal last week, Liverpool played out a miserable 2-0 loss in Burnley on Saturday.

Andre Gray doubled the Clarets' advantage on 37 minutes, putting the game beyond the visitor, but his hero status was short-lived when he had to respond to nefarious homophobic and sexist tweets of his that were unearthed from 2012.

Sunderland teased by Tees foe

Money can acquire Donald Love, but David Moyes can't buy the love of Sunderland fans.

The Black Cats were roundly booed following Sunday's 2-1 home loss to Teesside club Middlesbrough - a match which saw Cristhian Stuani bag a brace with two fine goals - and Moyes is telling fans to get ready for another season of struggle.

"People are hoping for it to dramatically change, but it can't," he admitted post-match.

Buying players of greater pedigree than Love, old freebie Steven Pienaar, and Chelsea castoff Papy Djilobodji might be a good place to start, David.

Chelsea reawakened under Conte

Last season, Chelsea's players stopped just short of requesting Netflix on the big screens of Stamford Bridge as they kicked back and snoozed their way through 2015-16. Under Antonio Conte, the restless, gesticulating Italian who took the helm this summer, those attitudes simply won't fly.

N'Golo Kante bounces around midfield ensuring his teammates are awake, and it was one of that reinvigorated throng, Cesc Fabregas, whose delicious pass carved open the Watford defence to assist Diego Costa for a late winner in Saturday's 2-1 win.

An unexpected opportunity has been handed to Victor Moses, too. The Nigeria international has spent each of the last three seasons away on loan, but has been a valuable substitute in the two opening wins through his hounding of the full-backs, and his physicality offering a precious outlet when winding down the clock.

Conte's first requisite when choosing his lineup is selecting players who will fight, and if enough of them buy into his methods Chelsea has every chance of hoisting the Premier League trophy in May.

Around the grounds

The most impressive result of the weekend came courtesy of Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, which travelled to the Potteries on Saturday to beat Stoke City 4-1. The host's main attacking outlet was Marko Arnautovic in acres of space on the left, but the bleach-haired bottler habitually made a hash of his opportunities to punish those in blue.

West Ham United cut the ribbon on Premier League commitments at its new London Stadium - the venue of the 2012 Olympics - with Sunday's visit of Bournemouth. As an event, it was dour late 1-0 win for the Irons, with the greatest form of entertainment coming from predicting which way Cherries new boy Jordon Ibe will lose possession each time he receives the ball. A potential drinking game there.
