Whether unwanted or not, Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata is reportedly expected to stay at Old Trafford through the summer transfer window, according to Sky Sports.

Mata's future at the club was thrown into question the moment new manager Jose Mourinho took over, as the two had previously worked together at Chelsea before Mata was indiscriminately sold to the Red Devils for £37.1 million.

Mourinho compounded that sentiment on Sunday by substituting Mata into the team's Community Shield tilt against Leicester City on the hour mark, then substituted him out with three minutes remaining in the match.

Mourinho explained his unorthodox decision by pointing out his team had one substitution left and, up by just one goal, he wished to run out the clock a little longer.

The Portuguese tactician also offered that Mata exited shortly after coming on because Mourinho wanted to "take off the smallest player" on the field.
