Ibrahimovic praises new strike partner Rooney

Manchester United's latest star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic insists there isn't a case of "out with the old, in with the new" up top at Old Trafford, praising long-serving attacker Wayne Rooney ahead of a testimonial match in his honour against Everton on Wednesday night.

Though manager Jose Mourinho's preferred to utilize a 4-2-3-1 formation in recent years with both Chelsea and Real Madrid, Ibrahimovic believes there's still room on the field for both he and Rooney to operate - and thrive.

"I think every big player can work with other big players. That's not a problem," Ibrahimovic told MUTV, as quoted by Sky Sports. "We are 11 players, not two players on the pitch. It's up to the coach what he wants but, with him, I see no problems. Only success.

"I said many years ago the perfect partner for a striker is Wayne Rooney. He works not only for himself but for the striker and the whole team.

"I'm absolutely happy to be one of the guys beside him."

Ibrahimovic joined a Manchester United team looking for redemption after failing to perform up to fans' expectations under Louis van Gaal. While Rooney has not escaped his fair share of criticism, Ibrahimovic insists the England stalwart remains a key piece to the Red Devils' attack.

"He has performed at the top every year," Ibrahimovic said. "I think he is a perfect example for young players to look at and take after. He's been playing such a long time for a top club and giving results year after year.

"Not everybody can succeed with that but he is one of them. I'm very happy I'm in his team and will do my best to help him win."
