Brad Guzan is reportedly on the verge of ending his eight-year association with Aston Villa as he gets set to join newly promoted Middlesbrough on a free transfer.

The American goalkeeper will undergo a medical before becoming Middlesbrough's ninth signing of the summer, Louise Taylor of the Guardian reports.

Guzan, who is expected to sign a two-year contract, will compete for the starting role with new signing former Barcelona 'keeper Victor Valdes, who joined Middlesbrough after a dismal spell with Manchester United. Dimi Konstantopoulos will also challenge for a starting role between the pipes.

The 31-year-old joined Villa in 2008 from Chivas USA of Major League Soccer, and went on to appear in over 100 matches for The Claret & Blue Army.

Although he appeared in a majority of Villa's matches last season (28), Guzan's playing time dwindled as the season progressed.

Pierluigi Gollini's arrival at Villa from Hellas Verona this summer didn't help matters, and appears to have ultimately spelled the end to Guzan's lengthy career with the Midlands side.
