Team needs: 3 more moves Manchester City should make in the transfer window

Arguably the most interesting hub of European football is in Manchester this summer - and the attention is beamed right onto the noisy neighbours just east of the city centre.

Considering his novel approaches to training and tactics, rather than the often defensively stout work of new Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho, Pep Guardiola's tenure at Manchester City is going to be scrutinized closely.

After stints at Barcelona and Bayern Munich, this represents his first spell in charge of a side not exactly accustomed to winning - four domestic trophies since the 2008 takeover of City is a modest return. As Guardiola looks to lift his new side to the higher echelons of European football, further recruitment is required.

Here are three more moves City needs to make in the summer transfer window:

Central defenders

Due to Vincent Kompany's recurring thigh issues and Martin Demichelis appearing creaky-limbed at 35, a lot of trust was placed in Eliaquim Mangala and Nicolas Otamendi last season.

It didn't work out particularly well. Both were found wanting for concentration on numerous occasions and - although Otamendi's ambitious wanderings and misjudged long passes suggest he thinks otherwise - they aren't ball-playing defenders.

Guardiola demands composure and the ability to start attacks from the backline, so rumours that City is in for one of the Spaniard's "favourite ever players" in Leonardo Bonucci isn't surprising. The Juventus defender showed what a cultured performer he is with Italy at Euro 2016, and if City is to be shoved into the world's elite, a £50-million move for Bonucci may be necessary.

Full-backs could be looked into as well in light of Pablo Zabaleta's injury concerns and Aleksandar Kolarov's defensive ineptitude.

Potential targets: Hector Bellerin (Arsenal), Leonardo Bonucci (Juventus), Bruno Peres (Torino), John Stones (Everton)

Support for Aguero

Despite a promising half-season or so from Alvaro Negredo, Sergio Aguero hasn't had a reliable strike partner since Carlos Tevez departed in 2013.

The only splashes Wilfried Bony has managed to make with his shooting are in the nearby canal network, and Kelechi Iheanacho is very raw at 19. Too much stress has been put on Aguero's susceptible muscles and tissues, and that will continue unless changes are made.

Reports of advanced talks to sign Borussia Dortmund's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have hushed, and since then, City hasn't been seriously linked with an automatic first-choice striker.

If City doesn't make a splurge, either Pep trusts Iheanacho, or he intends to reinvent the role of a current squad member or incoming player.

Potential targets: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Borussia Dortmund), Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich), Marlos Moreno (Atletico Nacional), Leroy Sane (FC Schalke 04)

Get rid of the passengers

And there's one passenger in particular who needs to go: Yaya Toure.

The Ivorian etched his name in City folklore in his first four seasons, then took a sandblaster to his inscription by following those efforts with two below-par, distracted terms. His languid waddling against Dynamo Kyiv in the last campaign provided just one example of how the 33-year-old has been frustrating fans:

Elsewhere, Jesus Navas amassed more minutes in sky blue than anybody else in 2015-16 - yes, he of the lightning pace but predictable, daisy-cutting delivery. He suffices as a backup, but shouldn't be a starter.

The position of Samir Nasri also needs to be looked into. The former Arsenal midfielder managed just four Premier League starts in Manuel Pellegrini's final season.

With Guardiola expected to guide City to glory in at least one of the four competitions it will be part of, he cannot afford to carry the passengers that blighted Pellegrini's tenure.
